My talk at MIST Atlanta, 4/13/13, "Patience In Practice"

The theme for this year's MIST (Muslim Interscholastic Tournament) was patience. MIST is a regional/national event in which high school students compete in various competitions (eg, oratory, debate, math, basketball, etc) and listen to different talks when they are not competing. University students and people in various occupations are the judges and volunteers. I was asked to speak again at this year's Atlanta event. This time, though, I thought of what to say at the last minute and made the mistake of writing everything down--in the same way I write my blog posts--instead of just speaking spontaneously. So be forewarned and please excuse my mumbling!

I recorded it because a friend asked me to do so and I am posting it here in case anyone else is curious and because I haven't written anything in a while.

  1. MashaAllah!
Yes you mumbled a bit but it was still a good speech and mA you can project your voice. I read some of your prior posts where you mentioned not being able to speak up since the accident but you don't seem to have this issue anymore :)

I agree with the Sheikh your personality really does shines through!
So glad you put this up.

  2. Nah, I agree with Southern Admirer. The mumbling was hardly noticeable. Besides, we all have those moments. I tripped over a couple of words in my French presentation recently as well and people laughed along haha. And it would have been hard to speak spontaneously for half an hour. It was a very good speech overall!

    1. Thank you, Rabiya! Haha, I'm hoping it was hardly noticeable to some people. I noticed it a lot when I tried watching it so I had to close out after about 10 seconds.

  3. I've read your story over and over again a good dozen or so times in various places, but I must say, hearing it from you was quite special. I like that you put a completely different spin on everyone's idea of patience, and I agree with you 100%. Bring patient isn't about dreaming about a day in the future and waiting for it, that's just wasting time. Patience is about enjoying what you have today and realizing that Allah has control over everything - so true, man, you deserved a louder applause in my opinion. Also, I was pretty surprised when you said you never (NEVER?) question or feel down about your circumstances. Mashallah, that's incredible, I hope you never do, and I hope I can live like that one day.
Thanks so much for putting this up!

    1. I have at least 10 people on my friend request thing. I send everyone a message asking who they are before I confirm or ignore them. Reply to the message I sent!
